Subterranean Lairs of the Deep
I have been working on several photographs where I use the camera lens like a paintbrush. Abstract expressionism meets the photographic gaze. Whereas most photographers use a flashlight or laser pointer as the brush, my movements involve expressive gesturing which creates the composition from available light sources.
These photographs explore alternate perceptions of space and time. Psychedelic scenes and spatial distortions fly past the viewer who is thrust into a perceptual playground of endless possibility. Frame layering and long exposures in the field result in an experimental layering of image and light. The results are often anomalous when painting with light, although the successful photographs are a testament to the expression of one who is not harnessed by the rules of photography. When I spin around, dizzying myself while exposing the photograph, it is no longer so much about the gaze and more about the physicality of holding the camera. This photography work is an experiment in augmented perception, a manifestation of time and space delivered by the portal of the camera lens.
